The Historical Societies of Romeo, Ray and Washington Townships are pleased to announce the release of their 2023 calendar titled, “School Days: Lessons from Our Past”. The calendar is a collaborative effort between the Friends of the Ray Township Library & Historical Society, the Greater Washington Area Historical Society, and the Romeo Historical Society. The calendar features historical images of the schools throughout our community, from the 1860’s one-room schoolhouses to the earliest Romeo Senior High School buildings as well as inspirational sayings on education and learning.
This year, the Greater Washington Area Historical Society is hosting a 2023 Calendar Launch and Used Book Sale at the Washington Historical Museum (58230 Van Dyke) on Sunday, November 13th from 1:00 – 4:00pm. We invite you to join us for light refreshments and self-guided tours of the Washington Historical Museum (the 1916 Old Washington High School). The calendar will be available to purchase for $10.00 and hundreds of gently used books from the latest novels to novel war books and classic car manuals to classic tales will be available by donation to the Greater Washington Area Historical Society.
Proceeds from calendar and book sales on November 13th will benefit the “Raise the Roof” project for the Washington Historical Museum. The goal of the project is to remove and replace the original wood shingles and the asbestos slate tiles on the entire roof of the Museum. Currently, $16,500 has been raised towards the estimated $60,000 cost of the project. The Society is planning additional fundraisers and anticipates applying for matching grants to complete the project.
Following the event, calendars can be purchased for $10.00 throughout the community, at the following location: Washington Historical Museum, Octagon House, Ray Township Public Library, Ray Township Offices, Romeo Arts & Archives Center, Washington Township Offices, Jarvis Accounting, Jarzyna Farms Fine Meats & Deli, Heritage Oaks, KO Music Studio, and Vince & Joe’s Pizza & Deli. Proceeds will benefit the Society in each community where the calendar is sold.
The Societies wish to thank all our sponsors whose support covered the cost of printing the calendars ensuring all proceeds benefit historical preservation projects. Our thanks also to the Romeo District Library and members of the community for donating images.
